The little town of Hastings has a new folk/Americana-influenced duo comprised of Kay Iris, singer, songwriter, guitarist, and activist, alongside accomplished instrumentalist and songwriter Matt Patmore. Their songs aim to inspire and empower. We spoke to the duo recently when they were discussing “Last to Be Sung.’
Kay Iris says of the song,
“’Last To Be Sung’ is a passionate and tender call to action, asking listeners to consider the topics of conservation, sustainability and their own global impact. A folk ballad at heart, ‘Last To Be Sung’ addresses the defeatist apathy that can often go hand-in-hand with these subjects, as well as the power of positive change, no matter how little the contribution. It is a song of praise, empowering people to celebrate their contribution to planet earth, and a song of hope, looking to inspire more and more people to reduce their impact on planet earth. More than ever, these topics need consideration and action. ‘Last To Be Sung’ is our love letter to Mother Earth and others that wish to help her too.”
Creating sounds for sustainability—Kay Iris intends to use their platform to help promote sustainable and ethical lifestyle choices. Past projects include their ‘One Tank, One Tree’ tour, in which they partnered with ‘Tree Nation’ to donate trees to reforestation projects based on how far they traveled. Looking forward, they hope to attain a line of sustainable and ethically sourced merchandise to perform at ecofriendly festivals such as ‘The Vegan Campout’, ‘Into the Wild’ and ‘Black Deer Festival’, as well as supporting conservational charities and venues.
My Review:
This is a very serious lyric about the difficulties our planet is in. The lyrics say, we are a “ship with no captain,” and “is this the end, or just the beginning?”
Kay Iris places an uplifting instrumental over a sadness within the fire burning in the paradise that is our Earth and home. It is an enjoyable track because of the harmony and melody, sad if you listen to the words.
It is quite an achievement to get a serious message into a song without making the listener feel the message is being forced. I am rarely someone who likes being preached to in music; however, this was absolutely not how I felt with this. I left listening to the track in a positive mindset, enjoyed the rhythm of the piece and apoplauded the sentiment. These two are first and foremost entertainers.
