With this review we welcome a new live reviewer, Hannah KW, she will be doing occasional pieces here and we bid her welcome to our little team. In today’s review Hannah sets off to Hull where Loudhailer Electric Company were hitting the stage, supported by Spirit of the Hawk. Photo credits for this piece are Hannah KW.
Loudhailer Electric Company are:
Lou Duffy-Howard – Songwriter and vocalist/bassist Lou had Indie chart topping success with recently reformed influential indie band Red Guitars, best known for No. 1 single “Good Technology” and Independent album “Slow to Fade,” before releasing two albums on Virgin Records.
Jeff Parsons – Influenced by The Who and American psychedelic bands, and with a first album – “Dead Fingers Talk’s ‘Storm the Reality Studios” – produced by the late great Mick Ronson, Jeff’s upside down guitar style sends the Loudhailer Electric Company into orbit.
Richard Duffy-Howard – Poet, former space age trance world dub band spoken wordsmith and acoustic rhythm guitarist.
Mark Hurton– Drums
It’s a few days on from the psychedelic, halcyon mashup that was Loudhailer Electric Company at the New Adelphi Club (Hull) and I’ve gathered my thoughts on one of the oddest, friendliest gigs I’ve been to.
Starting the night was the support act, Spirit of the Hawk. They were absolutely fantastic and are deserving of a full review. I will be going back to see them when possible, and I recommend whoever reads this to do the same.
The main band in question, Loudhailer Electric Company, is admittedly one I had not heard of before that night. However, seeing the turnout and joy they brought over the night, they seem to be a staple band for Hull. From members who in earlier days who played in Dead Fingers Talk (Jeff Parsons – lead guitar), and Red Guitars (Lou Duffy-Howard – frontwoman) they very much created their own new sound. My personal favorite touch was the slide guitar providing a slick clean sound in the midst of an otherwise spacey-psychedelic show.
The band took us through journeys of their interpretations of books, trips with dragons, and star trek adventures. Their storytelling about the songs made them all more enjoyable, and they showed us their love of certain books, taking us with on (largely Yorkshire based) adventures.
The demographic of the audience can be visualized through my favorite overheard comment of the night in the queue outside, that the only drugs people will be sneaking in tonight will only be aspirins. This was a bonus of the night, and it felt like everyone was reliving their halcyon days, and inviting us along. The fun and friendly atmosphere filled with an audience desperate to boogie, was compounded when the guitarist leapt the metaphorical barriers and joined the revelers on the dance floor. If you have a chance to see Loudhailer Electric Company I highly recommend that you get yourself down to see them and make yourself popular by remembering those aspirins!

Thus, Loudhailer Electric Company delivered a night that was a community experience, full of warmth, nostalgia, and joyful chaos. With their unique storytelling and psychedelic flair, they turned the New Adelphi Club Hull into a playground of sound and spirit. Hull clearly treasures them, and after this show, it’s easy to see why.
