I have just got back from a Halloween party and I know you are all agog to know whether I went as a vampire, or zombie (complete with rotting flesh and an arm dropping off) – sorry to disappoint but I went as Poison Ivy and looked pretty good even though I say so myself.

Anyway hyped up on late night energy and not ready for sleep I decided to keep the bosses here happy and get a review done before bed…and The Modbeats new single seemed a nice way to close the day.

The Modbeats are:

Philip Dunn (vocals/guitar),

Joe Mandia (guitar),

Scott Matison (bass),

and Fizz (drums),

I will share the press review:

“Midnight Train” marks the first new music from The Modbeats since their debut album “Ballad of a Starving Artist.” Already a fan favorite of their live shows, the track bursts with raw energy, intensity, and lyrics that cut straight to the core. Propelled by driving rhythms, “Midnight Train” is both an outward escape into the night and an inward dive into the mind. The single is now available on all major streaming platforms.

Fresh off the heels of their first album, The Modbeats waste no time delivering an electric new era of escapism and resistance through rock ’n’ roll. “Midnight Train” continues the themes of “Ballad of a Starving Artist”—endurance through troubled times, the allure of far-off destinations, and the refusal to be confined. Long a staple of their live sets, the song finally arrives in recorded form as a preview of the rawer, more collaborative direction their forthcoming second album will take. Written and composed by lead singer Philip Dunn, the song urges listeners to live fully in the present: “Climb aboard the midnight train to freedom / To call on the farthest depths of your mind.”

My Review:

The track is released on all platforms October 30.

This track took me back to the days of Britpop with a modern edge in the guitars. This is the type of track that you would hear on commercial radio and find yourself asking Alexa to turn the volume up! It has that light getaway feeling that chases away the midnight blues – get running, train to catch! More seriously, at just over four minutes it is a confident single that leans on past sounds yet gives them a fresh polish.

So, if you fancy a bit of sonic escapism wrapped in guitars and late-night swagger, hop aboard The Modbeats’ “Midnight Train”—destination: rock ’n ’roll satisfaction. It’s one for your playlist, your car stereo, and your midnight musings alike.

  • I’m going to give a nod toward another track by The Modbeats that I think you should check out if you have a moment. Their May 2025 single “Hold Me, Roll Me” is pure rock n’ roll fun, old fashioned dance hall fun. I’d love to hear this one live, I bet it rips along!
