This new single from Callum Sutton came out on August 9, so is out and about on all platforms now. I actually had this review done around the time of release (honestly), but then the holiday hit (not easy with an 8 month old baby!) and I headed off on the family quest for sun and beaches! Back to the grind and my review is here at last!
The press release tells me: “With over 10 years experience entertaining crowds and hitting the road across the UK and Europe, Callum Sutton and his travelling band are not to be missed. Combining infectious jungle rhythms and old school soul blues and rock n roll sensibility, Callum Sutton brings his uniquely crafted original tunes to the stage, supported by his tremendous band. Wowing audiences with his distinctive fusion of blues, funk, soul, world and jazz, his finely crafted arrangements are a sophisticated shell for a raw and fiery centre of musical energy created and shared by Sutton and his band.
“Give You Something” blends vintage R&B grit with heartfelt storytelling, channeling the spirit of The Rolling Stones, James Brown, and Van Morrison while carrying Sutton’s unmistakable voice and swagger. Written in his early twenties and reimagined years later, the song’s extended outro—soaring Hammond B3, mantra-like gospel harmonies, and groove-driven percussion—cements it as one of his most electrifying releases yet.
“Give You Something” is the fourth single from “The Union,” a ten-track collection handpicked from over 150 songs Sutton has written over the past 12 years. The album will be accompanied by a full-length concert film dropping this Autumn.”
My review:
“Give You Something” -There are thus many different reasons why I would want to listen to Callum and the new single definitely has a bluesy vocal and musical feel, alongside a lovely background vocal harmony and a funky rhythm from the instrument section. I would think that this is purpose built for the live performance as it has a decent dance feel in there that got me moving! “Give You Something” shows Callum Sutton at his soulful, funky best – a track built for the stage, but just as irresistible through your headphones.
I am also going to give a shout out for the track
“Pieces” is an earlier track that has a strong connection to the new single. It delivers a masterful funky groove infused with a blues vocal. I like it a lot and I think you would be too dear reader! Come on…a corpse could dance to this one! Get your funk out!
