It seems entirely appropriate in these hot and humid days to be reviewing an EP about being on an island. I could do with some of that peace and harmony now!

Mae Muller we have not had in the magazine before, although maybe we should have. She is currently an independent artist, but she has had previous considerable success, including representing the UK in the Eurovision song-contest.

After a whirlwind rise to pop stardom — including a Platinum-certified hit and a debut album, — Mae took a step back from the industry in early 2024, determined to rediscover the joy in music for herself. “Not having a label has forced me to trust myself, which is a really powerful tool,” she says. My Island is the exhilarating result of that introspective journey — a celebration of solitude, self-trust, and sonic playfulness.

This EP was sitting looking at me in my in tray and I felt that it needed a listen!

My review:

The EP was released on July 18, so it is out on all streaming platforms now.

It has five songs and lasts just over 12 minutes.

“My Island” opens to the command to have a good time, you can find Mae lying on her island with no-one else there! It is synth driven, light and drifty in feel.

“Hello Kitty” takes us off to the dance floor for a bop! It has a built-in party in the pocket and a bounce feel to it that you can just imagine playing out on a packed late night club floor.

“Touch Me City” drives with the drum and bass feel. It has a slow and slightly darker feel. A bit similar to “In My Head” (which I actually heard first), it talks to us, an immediacy in the vocal and an instrumental that is calmer and more urban.

“In My Head (I Hate It Here)” surprised me as it moved into Lily Allen territory. I liked it as it has this twist in the head style of delivery, a basic bass feel as Mae talks to us about how she hates it here. It has a bit of edge. It is the best track on the EP ( I liked the video too).

“Breakaway” closes the EP with a return to the club pop beat. This is dreamy dance pop.

So, this is an introspective lyrical EP with a techno pop dance beat. Mae Muller has a huge listener base, but is seeking to refashion herself with this EP, a desire to return to herself and squeeze that lemon of success for herself again.

Overall, My Island is a tightly packed slice of electro-pop that charts Mae Muller’s journey to personal musical rebirth. There’s vulnerability here, but also defiance — a woman reclaiming her space, her sound, and her sanity. Each track feels like a dispatch from her own emotional hideaway: sometimes euphoric, sometimes melancholy, always honest.

It’s not just a sonic escape — it’s a statement. Muller may be without a major label right now, but creatively, she’s never sounded more in control. My Island isn’t just a destination, it’s a declaration: Mae Muller knows exactly who she is, and she’s not afraid to dance alone. Definitely worth a spin this summer — especially if you’re dreaming of an island of your own.
