Adele and Andy’s new single “Forgotten Roots”

Adele and Andy are a husband-and-wife acoustic duo who only started their music career in April 2019. During this time, they have played at over 30 venues across Staffordshire and in doing so, they were awarded “Acoustic Duo of the Year” by the Mark’s Readers Choice Awards. Their songs are a mixture of modern country covers by artists such as Miranda Lambert, Carrie Underwood, and, increasingly, originals based on real-life issues.

We were lucky enough to chat to this due a year or so ago, around the time of their album release for “Angels and Demons,” and they keep going from strength to strength. It is great watching their development into leading lights in the British country scene. Big hitters such as “Whiskey On Your Breath” now are watching figures of 18k streams and rising.

Andy told us around the time of the album release: “We don’t write songs just for the hell of it. We write because either they mean something to us or because we know they mean something to those around us. We very much hope our music is authentic and real in terms of what we are trying to get over, and that is important.”

This new single certainly fits this description. It is set for release on Monday, 9th September. It is a heartfelt tribute to the Stolen Generation, the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children, 1910-1970. These children were forcibly removed from their families by the Australian government in this time period, and the song delves into the pain, loss and resilience of all those impacted. The aim of the song is to raise awareness, honour the survivors and remind us of the importance of acknowledging and understanding the past, so we can heal and move forward together.

My review: This new single “Forgotten Roots” opens with a simple piano accompaniment before the drums join violins creating the wider melody. This is a sweeping and dynamic vocal track blending folk with a touch of country. It reminded me of the sea and wandering down a beach with the late evening sunset for some reason.

‘Hold Me Close in the Dark,” sings Adele, and this is a strong vocal performance from her, truly a vocal triumph.
