I don’t know if I should be doing a review at 11pm? (answers on the chat lol). I’ve just had a disagreement with the cat, sent the bosses here a feature piece for putting up and have made myself a nice cup of tea. And here in my in-tray is the new EP by London based trio Hazy Waters. This is a band whose name has been appearing through the noise a bit at the office and the boys gave me a review nudge!

We have not actually covered Hazy Waters here at the magazine before, but they do fall under our umbrella, they create a nineties feel for alternative rock with a spice of punk in the mix, interesting enough to tempt me to some late night listening!

The EP was released June 13 so is out now on all platforms.

The band comprises Agness, Aleks and Simon.

The EP has five songs and lasts just under 22 minutes.

“Attention” opens with drums and synth and a haunting vocal style that wanders through your mind. It is a bit sci-fi rock, a bit psychedelic, but retaining some pop melody. It took me toward Kirsty MacColl. It got my attention.

“Overdose” continues a slightly trippy feel to the rhythm, aka Beatles in “Revolver” era (kind of). It has a dreamy late night feel to it, and at 4.23 is one of the longer tracks – mood music.

“Deep Waters” continues that dreamy feel, making me think of that floating feeling. It has a slow beat rhythm. I liked the touches of the cymbals and the track is quite dark and free flowing.

“Gameboy” is darkly haunting, music to play while sitting in a graveyard with some mist hanging over the tombs. I like the drum sound throughout the EP, this track continues my appreciation!

“Her” is six minutes long and shows a confident musical journey. It shows Agness connect emotively to the music and she took me on a dreamy journey. I can see why “Attention” is their most listened to track, but this one is the most imaginative and developed lyrically and musically.

So, was it worth staying up past my bedtime, ignoring the cat’s disdain and letting my tea go cold? Absolutely. Hazy Waters have delivered an EP that shimmers with atmosphere and sneaks into your subconscious like a soundtrack to a dream you half-remember in the morning. It’s textured, thoughtful, and walks the tightrope between nostalgic and new with style.

If this is their opening statement, I’d say the trio are onto something pretty special.

And we hope you liked the review, dear reader! If you did, please check out the other pages of the magazine; we have many great features, merchandise pages, shops, editorials and even a poetry page. Content is free here, but we work hard for you, and to support the magazine, please show your appreciation on the support button below and buy me a coffee!
