The Delphi Ravens are an indie/alternative rock band combining influences from several genres. Delphi Ravens were founded in late 2019 by bassist and ASCAP songwriter Papa B.™ The band comes from the Pacific Northwest with its rich history of breakthrough music. Vocalist Kira delivers her dynamic vocals and co-writes many of the songs.
Delphi Ravens have some pedigree! They have charted 7 songs in 2022-24. Hardest Goodbye was #2 on the Hypeddit Top 100 chart. Delphi Raven on the Broadjam Top 10 Chart and #7 on MTV Top 100. Phobia kicked off 2022 as the runner-up for Song of the Month at Broadjam and #3 on the Top 10 Chart. In 2022, “Take My Hand” spent an incredible 34 weeks in the Museboat Radio Top 25 Chart and finished #19 for the year (among all music genres). “Between the Lines” spent 26 consecutive weeks in the Top 40 at Museboat in 2023. Nine songs have received 13 songwriting awards in 2021-24. The World Songwriting Awards selected Red to Black as a Best Rock Song Top 3 finalist in 2022. In 2023, Phobia was selected as Best Rock Song finalist, and Burn at Both Ends as Best Alternative Song finalist.
The new album, “Keeper of Secrets,” was released on February 21, so it is available on all platforms now. It has 13 songs and runs to just over 53 minutes.
My review:
“Between the Lines.” At 2.24, one of the shortest tracks on the album opens it. I didn’t know this band so it was an introduction to their sound. It took me into a melodic punk/rock fusion. The vocals from Kira I really liked; the backing harmony worked and I liked the song; it had an energy and was a great introduction.
“Burn at Both Ends” is a rocker, very radio-friendly with Brandon’s drums coming through nicely on this one. The chorus works and there is a touch of prog rock coming through in this one. Again, a pleasing guitar break and solid bass support throughout.
“Bittersweet” is a dark ballad that I really liked. Actually, I liked it a lot! The guitar breaks work and the vocals nail a sense of anguish with a lovely melodic feel. It’s a very well-crafted ballad and the piano was a welcome addition to the piece.
“How Wrong You Were” is solid, driven by the drum and bass beat. A decent album track with a good rock riff.
“Final Chance” is a slower, darker, track with a power chorus. It fits nicely into the album without the standalone qualities of a couple of the earlier tracks. It again takes me more toward prog rock territory.
“Last Memories” has a heavy pop vibe. I liked the vocal delivery and it is lyrically interesting with little touches musically of the East. It’s one of the shorter tracks and moves direction a lot, maybe too much for me.
“Hardest Goodbye” opens with a lovely rhythm and simple beat; the vocals lift over the music nicely, growing wings. I liked this one; it has to be very radio friendly. Here in the UK, this would be strong Radio 2 territory, melodic rock delivered with an infectious beat. I’d get this one on my personal playlist anytime.
“Red to Black” is a bit more grungy and dirty, moving gear musically. The band can certainly offer light and shade on the music; this one turns toward the crimson and the tragic.
“Insomnia” is one of those album tracks that is fine for the album. I listened to it and liked it, but I didn’t connect with it or remember it like I did with the real standouts. Another solid vocal from Kira; she’s good!
“Phobia” leads with a heavy bass and drum sound, slightly distorted, into an interesting prog rock/alt rock style.
“Delphi Raven” runs to 7.29 minutes so it is one of the longer tracks on the album. An opening with heavy jungle drums and atmospheric guitars presents its own sonic energy. Slow instrumental build up with a heavy overall vibe. It’s about ravens, and I’ve never considered them birds of ill omen; I like them! It’s a heavy riff-based track.
“Justify” moves at a hurry and returns to a melodic, punky feel. A catchy chorus and a decent message within the lyrics.
“Take My Hand” is a ballad to close the album. It does pick up speed around the 2-minute mark and provides a commercial rock feel to close the album.
Standout tracks: “Between the Lines,” “Bittersweet,” and “Hardest Goodbye.”
Summary: Delphi Ravens deliver a dynamic and diverse album that blends elements of punk, rock, and prog with strong vocal performances and solid musicianship. Kira’s vocals shine throughout, particularly on the darkly melodic “Bittersweet” and the infectious “Hardest Goodbye,” while Brandon’s drumming drives the rock-heavy “Burn at Both Ends.” The album shifts moods effortlessly, from the grungy, brooding tones of “Red to Black” to the atmospheric, epic closer “Delphi Raven.” While some tracks feel more like standard album fillers, the standouts make a lasting impression, showcasing the band’s ability to balance melody, energy, and depth. Overall, this is a well-crafted and engaging release with plenty of memorable moments.
