Lead Belly: A Blues History

Lead Belly was a complicated man and certainly no saint. But he made some wonderful, wonderful music, and his influence travelled far beyond the blues.

From Bob Dylan to Nirvana, musicians across generations found something in his songs and his distinctive twelve-string guitar playing. His music crossed boundaries between blues, folk and gospel, carrying stories from the American South into the wider world.

At Rock the Joint, we believe in celebrating new artists, but we also stand on the shoulders of giants. Lead Belly is one of those giants — and his music deserves to be remembered.

Catfish-Interview with Matt Long

SINCE DOING THIS INTERVIEW AND FEATURE, MATT LONG HAS BEEN SERIOUSLY ILL. HE PASSED AWAY ON OCTOBER 6, 2024 AT THE AGE OF ONLY 29. WE WERE SO UPSET TO READ THE NEWS AND OUR THOUGHTS WILL ALWAYS BE WITH HIS FAMILY AND FRIENDS FOR THEIR LOSS. WE HAVE LEFT THE FEATURE AS IT WAS, IN OUR TRIBUTE TO THIS GREAT TALENT WHO WILL BE SO MUCH MISSED WITHIN THE BLUES AND ROCK COMMUNITY. IT WAS A PRIVILAGE TO HAVE DONE THIS FEATURE. GOD BLESS MAT, RIP.
