It is late night after, in my opinion, an unproductive Saturday. Such was my frustration at seemingly allowing the day to drift that, as we close in on midnight, I have removed a cat from my sofa (where he had occupied my spot) and grabbed the laptop. The late-night target is the lovely Sarah Louise, who we have followed off and on over these last few years.

As Sarah explains, “It wasn’t about becoming someone different for another person; it was about discovering the confidence to become the person I’d always been underneath.”

“Different Kind of Girl” is a pop number that took me straight back to being young, going jogging with a Sony Walkman and listening to those poppy, feel-good numbers as I pounded along. There is something immediately accessible about this track, with its synth touches, strong chorus and upbeat feel. “Different Kind of Girl” is bright, catchy and confident.
It also presents us with a slightly different Sarah Louise. The country look we’ve seen from her previously has been replaced by something altogether more urban chic. If the earlier Sarah Louise might have been pictured with her guitar and country styling, this version feels ready to put on the high heels and head out into the world.
And that fits the subject matter rather nicely. “Different Kind of Girl” is about change, confidence and discovering a version of yourself that perhaps has been there all along. Musically, Sarah embraces that sense of movement, with the synths adding a modern sheen while the strong chorus gives the song its real hook. There is a real sense of stepping forward here. Sarah Louise hasn’t abandoned the elements that have made her music recognizable, but she has dressed them up a little differently and headed somewhere new.
