I will do some scene setting. We have a joint magazine email here where reviews get sent and, remember, we have three reviewers who wade our way through a lot of submissions. Our review policy, here, is that we review what we like and are happy to recommend. Anyway…we are all having two weeks off as of tomorrow and the instruction from Benny (editor) was to have that intray cleared by today. And it is! Everything we wanted to do has been reviewed. So I’m ready to get cleaning the house pre guests and suddenly Mark (editor 2/friend) tells me there is one review missing on Instagram. So, ever efficient I’m reviewing Olivia Lynn, one of the artists we do always love to chat with and who we have followed along with since she was 16!

She’s a creature of the night, one of those artists who you will get a reply from at 1.30 am but will be silent in the morning lol.

This single is a release from her upcoming album and connects to her time in Spain. We asked her about that period last time we spoke, she told us,

“The new songs are a mixture of old and new. There are songs that look back at my past self, the pre-Spain me, and that is still a part of who I am. But there is also the new era of me, post-Spain, being a mom. These are more stripped-back songs and a different type of country song that I can’t wait to share and am very excited about. Each song sounds so different; I am confidently writing again.”

We asked Olivia to tell us a little about this track as it seems to date from that early Spain period.

So, this is a single from the new album, very exciting. When you have a collection of songs what criteria for a single do you use? Is it, radio play, commercial feel etc?

Olivia: To be honest I’m probably super unprofessional when it comes to analytics  and things like that. I genuinely just put a song out when I feel the time is right? “6 months” meant so much to me and I thought it was time I was vulnerable with my audience again and shared a story with them!

Tell us a little of the history of the song as it feels it has a back story to it?

Olivia: It’s actually about me going away to Spain last year for 6 months! and how that amount of time may not feel like a long time to others, but to spend 6 months without my family felt like forever 🥲. And I really struggled at first! It’s also about how I’m gonna make it, and all these trips away and gigs will be worth it. I’m doing it for them.

And on to my review

The single is released on December 19 on all platforms.

It’s a song about spreading wings and heading off on your own when everything is telling you that those you love are somewhere else, at home. It is a song about youth, finding your path and discovering who you are.

“ It’s only six months, but it’s six months too long.” – for those who know her work there are echoes of “Modern Girl” in here lyrically, the desire to head out on that road, go far and be a star. She’s on the road still, but further along. The track is very narrative, storyteller in vibe. It is wistful and dreamy with a stripped back country feel, a mature track that belies her age.

Six months can change everything — and Olivia Lynn captures that quiet ache and brave hope beautifully, the single does lead naturally from her previous release “Open” – I have put that one at the end of the review.

Wistful, grown-up, and glowing with late-night honesty, this is an artist still chasing the dream, so trust us: put this on after midnight, hit repeat, and thank us later. 🌙🎶
