We are going to introduce our readers to a new, for us, band. Formed in 2021, Kubrick Stare consists of 4 members hailing from the north of England:
Libby Trelford (lead vocals),
Michael Shaw, (bass)
Andy Beaverage (guitars)
and Joe Egerton (drums).
My information pre-listening to the new single tells me that this female-fronted group has amassed a large amount of interest throughout their short journey, such as from the BBC Introducing Artists and Scruff of the Neck (link). They have played around the north of England alongside amazing acts like Flechettes, The Lotts, Isla Rico, Big Bambora, The Facades and Dakota Avenue. I am told that the band brings a massive sound, reigniting grunge and alternative music as we know and love. Crunchy guitar tones, deep vocals, and powerful bass deliver a unique and diverse sound that cuts through the noise.
With previous tracks “Killing Caroline” (I dipped into this one and loved the big guitar sound and the energy of the track) and “Juice Break” currently running at 8k + listens on Spotify, the new single is called “Sinking.”
My review: An interesting dreamy rock vibe moves the listener through this song. Around the .58 moment when the drum alone underpins the vocal and the cymbal is heard, it has an ethereal quality. Then at 1.26, it moves again. Musically, it took me into the territory of Siouxsie and the Banshees, mixed with a kind of grunge sound that is totally out of step with the melodic introduction to the track. It offers a different feel to the music; where “Killing Caroline” is a back-to-the-wall blaster, this is layered. A very strong drum performance providing a heartbeat and strength within the track.
I would suggest you dip in and have a listen, not just to this track but to what these guys have on offer. If you are a fan of goth rock/alternative rock/grunge and miss Siouxsie and the Banshees, then you will find something to enjoy here.
