It has been a hot and sombre weekend and I have not been entirely myself. However, at the risk of slipping into moroseness, I find some solace in the review tray and have dug out (metaphorically) the new single from one of my favourite bands of the moment, The Warning.

The Warning are a band that genuinely excite me and can usually get me out of a grump. They are currently on tour with Yungblud and have been releasing a steady stream of singles in recent months. Allow me to share the press release before doing the review.

I will note that the version of the track I am reviewing is the YouTube video version, listened to while I was relaxing in the bath. I mention this because I once fell out with the editor of a previous magazine (who shall remain nameless, although they are nowhere near as good as us!) who felt it was disrespectful to an artist when I noted in a review that I was listening to their album in the shower. I disagree. We consume music everywhere, and who I listen to in the bath is very much a compliment to them!

The Press Release:

The Warning unleash unapologetic force on their explosive new single “Ego”, out now via Island EMI Label Group. Sung entirely in Spanish, the track arrives alongside an equally intense official music video that made its broadcast premiere on MTV Live, and on the Paramount Times Square billboards.

Fuelled by a punchy electric guitar intro, razor-sharp riffs and relentless momentum, “Ego” finds the Monterrey sister trio delivering one of their heaviest and most confrontational tracks to date. The song’s infectious energy collides with towering instrumentation and an undeniable hook, while Paulina Villarreal’s visceral screams push the track into overdrive.

On “Ego”, The Warning channel defiance into empowerment, refusing to let outside judgement or other people’s insecurities dictate their identity, choices or success. The track takes aim at projection, criticism and ego-driven negativity with fearless conviction, transforming frustration into a bold statement of self-possession and resilience.

The accompanying music video mirrors the song’s intensity with striking visuals that further amplify the band’s fearless presence and rebellious spirit. The band note: “We loved shooting ‘Ego’! This music video is all about reclaiming your power, embracing confidence, and standing tall in your identity… even when the world is watching. It’s always so special for us to release music in our first language, Spanish, and we hope you love this song and video as much as we do.”

“Ego” follows the release of “Kerosene”, an incendiary anthem that showcased the band’s sharp songwriting and uncompromising edge. Together, the singles continue to expand The Warning’s ever-evolving sound while reinforcing the chemistry and fearlessness that have made them one of modern rock’s most exciting forces.

In 2026, the band continue their global takeover with performances at Lollapalooza festivals across South America, major European festival appearances and dates supporting Yungblud on the IDOLS World Tour across the UK and US. The Warning will also headline New York City’s Pier 17 on June 11.

My Review:

Released May 18, 2026 and on all platforms now.

At 2:57, this is a fast-moving number. I played it back-to-back to get a feel for this urban cinematic rock. This is slick, slightly more grungy than other recent releases, and it is music of Madrid city alleys, late nights in Majadahonda and the lingering taste of a whiskey drunk in one. Walk those streets in leather and heels and drink in the atmosphere that seems to drift naturally from Spain’s late-night culture.

The Warning have always possessed an ability to combine sheer power with precision, and “Ego” is no exception. The guitars hit hard, the rhythm section drives relentlessly forward and the vocals inject the track with both attitude and urgency. Even for listeners who do not speak Spanish, the emotion is unmistakable. Defiance, confidence and confrontation pour from every note.

What impresses most is how naturally the band move between accessibility and heaviness. There is enough melody here to lodge itself firmly in your head after a single listen, yet enough bite to satisfy those looking for something with genuine rock credentials. At under three minutes, “Ego” never outstays its welcome; if anything, it leaves you wanting another spin.

The Warning continue to establish themselves as one of the most exciting rock bands operating today. “Ego” is bold, unapologetic and packed with energy.
