Jumping on a line to Nashville, this feature includes a chat with Twinnie about her life in music, the new single and all things ongoing.

But first, a bit of background on the artist.

A true gypsy, Twinnie grew up in the Romani Travelling community in England, where her love for storytelling first started. She remembers childhood days at the Appleby Horse Fair and is proud to take that heritage forward to her new life in the US. She told us how she was at first hesitant to fully celebrate that history when she moved Stateside, but she styles herself now as the “Hollywood Gypsy,” telling us that ‘I am a traveller by nature and by heritage, so I am quite free. I call myself now the ‘Hollywood Gypsy’ that’s me, my life, my artistry’.

She made her stage debut when she was just 4 years old. She is no stranger to film or stage, working with the likes of Glenn Close, Christian Slater and Alan Menken.

While developing her own artistry, Twinnie performed as a backing dancer and singer to other artists like Robin Thicke and Pharrell Williams, alongside playing lead roles in London’s West End theatres in shows like ‘Chicago’ and ‘Rock of Ages’. She told us that she had the privilege of working with the absolute legend that is Brian May during her time with ‘Rock of Ages,” and how that time in music theatre really helped prepare her for what lay ahead.

Fresh from the release of the duet ‘Take A Break’ with Max Boyle, Twinnie continued her self-proclaimed “sad girl era” with the release of her latest single, ‘The Greatest Love Story’ on April 5.

The latest offering from the British native saw her build on her growing success, which has seen her make her Opry debut, have her ‘Lonely Long’ video premiere on a Time’s Square Billboard, score a SiriusXM Charting single, and be named as one of CMT’s Next Women of Country.

‘The Greatest Love Story’ is the newest installment of the upcoming EP from Twinnie that will feature an array of hard-hitting pop crossover songs—the second chapter of the ‘Blue Hour (After Dark)’ EP.

It tells the story of a lost love, laced with what could have been moments that replay over and over. It’s likely to strike a chord with anyone who has that person who feels like “the one that got away,” and Twinnie’s vocals are strong, vulnerable, and raw with emotion throughout, while the production packs a punch, making it a real standout.

We began by asking about the new single and noted how Twinnie brings storytelling into her music and lyrics. Her music is infused with tales she brings with her, and listening to her music, there is always a great mix of uptempo poppy tracks, anthemic choruses and ballads. From storytelling perspectives, Twinnie told us that she retained a deep enthusiasm for music, especially from narrative artists like Billy Joel, Shania Twain, and Dolly Parton.

Twinnie: Since I was a small child, I have been fascinated by lyrics, which are everything to me as a musician. It is based on a true story about my mother and stepfather. They met when they were young, but after 20 years apart due to misunderstandings and a letter never received, they got back together and have been together ever since. This music exists in the realm of hypothetical possibilities, a world that could have been. In addition to being incredibly poetic, my mother’s story gives me peace in knowing that everything turns out as it should. My siblings and I would probably not have been here, nor would this song, had they gotten together all those years ago.

One of the things we reflected on with Twinnie was the lasting memory of love at first sight. “I do believe in huge attraction at first sight, like fate, that you meet someone and you just know,” Twinnie says. It reminded us of the alternative to attraction at first sight, when you just know that you dislike someone! Dr. Fell syndrome is named from the Victorian nursery rhyme: “I do not like thee, Dr. Fell, and why that is, I cannot tell. But this I know, and I know so well, I do not like thee, Dr. Fell!” It is just the way; whether it is a previous life or just that chemistry one way or another, sometimes we just have that instant attraction or instant repulsion without really knowing why.

And does Twinnie bring in co-writers for her songs, or does she write the majority of them solo?

Twinnie: I do bring in co-writers sometimes, yes. My next single, “Girl in Your Songs,” and the EP that comes out on May 17th, I wrote by myself. I can use piano or guitar for songwriting, and I am more of a concept person when it comes to approaching a song.

There is one of Twinnie’s videos, “Welcome to the Club,” where it reminded us a little bit of Queen’s notorious “I Want to Break Free” video, where the band were all in drag, Freddie in his curlers, and so on. For British readers, the Coronation Street references were all there, and it hits a British sense of humour that, at the time of the Queen release, the US never understood. Apparently, Queen’s appeal dropped dramatically Stateside, after watching that video for a while, rockers in drag were not part of the American market!

Twinnie: I think it says a lot about America at that time. My first job was with Brian May in “We Will Rock You.” It tells the story of Bohemian Rhapsody and how the label didn’t want to play it, so Freddie went off and got it played, and it was a massive hit. That song has no rules; it doesn’t conform, and I love that.

Another aspect of the music business that Twinnie is active with is mental health in the music industry She is the co-founder of  ‘I Know A Woman,’ which seeks to support female artists with mental health. Twinnie spoke of the purpose this gives her, as she is aware of how mental health can negatively impact those in the industry. “Everyone here in the US has a therapist,” she says, and notes that she wants to help empower other women in the business. We often raise support for mental health here in the magazine and have spoken to artists in the UK, such as Olivia Lynn, who are also doing everything they can to raise awareness of this issue in the business.

And which musician would Twinnie have most liked to have seen live?

Twinnie: There are so many! It’s so hard to choose just one. I would love to have seen Randy Travers in 1987, when he came out with the album “Always and Forever.” I would also have loved to see Elvis in his younger 1950s era, not his Vegas years. Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons are another band I would have loved to see. And there is another big one! I would have loved to have seen the “Rat Pack,” all three of them, but Dean Martin especially. I seem to have picked all the boys! Billy Joel in his heyday is another, and Shania Twain in hers too. I would have to throw in Ella Fitzgerald too; she is a favourite of mine.

Of course, one of our favourites here at the magazine, Shirley King (BB King’s daughter), tells that wonderful story of meeting this dirty trucker in her dad’s kitchen and chatting to him before her mother shooed her away! That dirty trucker was a young Elvis who knew her dad, as he was a DJ at the time.

Twinnie: That sounds fun! Elvis is absolutely an artist I would have loved to meet or watch.
