Release date: July 12th, Alas de Liona introduces her new single for the summer, “Violet,” and it is available on all major platforms.
Los Angeles born and now Edinburgh local, singer-songwriter Alas de Liona has unveiled the ethereal ‘Violet’ (out July 12) as the second single off her upcoming debut album, out this autumn.
Once again produced by Idlewild’s Rod Jones, ‘Violet’ is released on Alas’ own Deli Owner Records via Absolute Label Services. The indie-pop tune has the hazy sound of a perfect summer anthem, but its message of insomnia, apprehension and replaying conversations on a loop does make it come with a certain asterisk. Alas’ ethereal vocals soothe as angst meets beachy vibes.
Born in California and raised in the Mojave Desert, Alas de Liona came to the UK to complete a university course, during which her musical talents emerged. Eventually, summer 2023 saw Alas make a life changing move from the USA to live full time in Scotland.
Our Review:
“What I am looking for could be a hollow world,” sings Alas de Liona in this new single. When we reviewed her previous release, “Analogy,” we said, ‘these great gothy vocals soar above that deep rhythm section, and the mood is urban and dark.’ This song, changes the mood for the season and delivers a mournful song of the season, where we count sheep instead of sleeping; it reminds me of Kate Bush in her “Hounds of Love,” period. The track plays with a simple melody, stripped back and allowing the vocals to steer the piece. It plays with the vocal harmonies and Alas de Liona tells us, “Somehow I’m creeping through a nightmare.” That said, with these vocals, I would happily slip into the nightmare, as it is more of a midsummer night’s dream. Live the moment and dream the dream.
