“War, what is it good for absolutely nothing,” sang Edwin Starr, and the sentiment remains largely valid today. War, unless you are fighting back against unwarranted aggression, appears to be very rarely a good thing, and recent events in the Ukraine have been beyond comprehension. Although this modern war on European soil may not be in all the headlines, the devastation and loss remain, and there are no winners.

This single by Chester Doom was written in early 2022 by vocalist Josh Best while he was recovering from COVID-19 and watching the unfolding events of the war in Ukraine, like so many of us, on the various news channels. The perseverance of the Ukrainian people, who endured extreme hardship but retained hope, served as an inspiration to Best. In “Not Far Behind,” Best channels that sense of hope and resilience, weaving a powerful and emotive story of perseverance in the face of adversity.

The track is a commentary on the strength of the human spirit and a reminder that, no matter how dark things may seem, we are never truly alone. There is that line in Harry Potter somewhere where they say that in the darkest of times, we must remember to turn on the light. We all get that light from somewhere, or we remain in the darkness.

This song has one hell of a video to go with it. You have this commercial sounding melodic rock with impassioned vocals. It clearly is a song that touches a chord, and what is the world if we cannot pass it on to our children in safety? The guitars are up front in the mix, and the drum sound kicks! It is a great anti-war song with a solid beat. It’s available on all major platforms, and I’ve placed a download link here. You can also see the video below, which I thought was very powerful.

Josh Best said, “This song is really personal to me, and I think it speaks to a lot of people who have been through tough times. We wanted to create something that would lift people up and remind them that they’re not alone. I’m really proud of how it turned out, and I can’t wait for people to hear it.”

If you enjoy modern melodic rock with a message that matters, grab it!
