Welsh singer/songwriter Laura Evans released her brand new single “What I’m Made Of,” accompanied by a music video, on April 12th, offering a sneak peek into her upcoming 4 track EP set for release on August 2nd, giving the fans a taste of what’s to come on her highly anticipated second studio album.
Laura is one of our favourites here at the magazine, and we have had the pleasure of speaking to her on a couple of occasions. We have linked the features at the end of this review.
Her latest album releases have now amassed over 2 million streams on Spotify, she has graced the cover of the ‘Nu Blue’ playlist and receives continued support from Cerys Mathews at BBC Radio 2 and BBC Radio Wales. Laura had a busy touring schedule in 2022 and 2023, fresh from sell out shows on her UK tour, followed by 11 dates on her European tour across the Netherlands, Germany & France. Her live performances have been described as a girl who is the’real deal’, and Classic Rock Magazine compares her to Stevie Nicks jamming with Blackberry Smoke, embracing notes of Americana, pop and bluesy rock and roll.
Talking about the new single, Laura said “I co-wrote this song last year with my partner Rich, and I knew it had to be the song to mark a new era as I was so excited by it. Inspired by my mother’s words of encouragement when I was a kid , ‘Show ‘em what you’re made of,“ a mantra I now fully embrace. This song is just a message of empowerment to myself more than anything else. Being a female in the music industry has its fair share of ups and downs, and I must remind myself to stay true to myself and create the art and music I want to make.
The single was produced by Sheffield based musician, songwriter and producer Nick Atkinson, and mastered at Abbey Road Studios. It is accompanied by a stunning, high energy music video filmed at Royal William Yard, Ocean Studios, featuring Laura’s live band, Joe Coombs, Daisy Pepper and Jamie Dawson. Filmed & edited by Richard Turner.
Our review of the single: This single sees Laura swinging back! I suspect her sound has really matured, and been honed, by touring and the number of shows she has been doing, as her band, and the sound is really tight. This one has a rock groove with an infectious melody in the chorus. It is also, lyrically, about standing up again, being yourself and showing all those who underestimate you. It’s a kicking track, very airwave-friendly, and commercially appealing. Really good! A little belter for April!
Laura has a busy touring schedule planned for later in the year, including festivals, headline shows, and a European tour and she hits the road with blues/rock legend ‘Walter Trout’ this October on his UK Tour.
