We spoke to these guys when their EP “Feed me Fire” was released, so we have been following their progress with interest.
At the time Ollie told us, “A lot of our first songs were very chord-driven. As we developed, we got onto “Dark Thoughts” and then “Feed Me Fire,” and so it is evolving as a band. Our general dynamic is changing. We have been described as hard rock, pop/punk.”
I think that this can be seen in recent singles where there has been an evolving sound. I’d especially give a nod to the release of the very interesting “Little Death,” which is a form of heavy prog rock, playing with this heavy riff and burning drum sound.
Turning to the new release, lead singer Kimberley says that it is a rallying cry to every woman who has been told to conform and come in line with society’s norms and expectations. All the lyrics are things that men have actually said to demean and belittle her.
My review:
The single (which is accompanied by a high-energy video, below) has a heavy melody and new drummer James gives a strong performance at the sticks, delivering a powerhouse heartbeat for the track. Around the 2.42 mark, the track gets really interesting, an almost cinematic instrumental moment where I was mentally taken into a Star Wars soundtrack for a moment (look, it’s all perspective, right? That’s where it took me to!). Another emotive vocal performance from Kimberley sets the track off nicely.
It’s raw, it’s bold, and it doesn’t ask for permission—”Remain Untamed” is a middle finger to conformity wrapped in thunderous riffs. If this is the direction Rogue Awakening is heading, then buckle up — the rebellion is just getting started.
